Carmen Northwest’s Javante Edwards signs to play basketball at Canisius University
On Wednesday, Nov. 20 in front of family, friends, teammates, and school staff, Carmen Northwest senior Javante Edwards signed his athletic financial aid agreement to play basketball at Canisius University, a Division I program in Buffalo, N.Y.
The athletic financial aid agreement replaced the NCAA’s national letter of intent earlier this fall.
“We’re here to celebrate not just a milestone, but a shining example of what is possible when we work hard, when we are determined, and when we believe in ourselves and the opportunities that come,” Carmen Northwest principal Ashlei Miller said during the celebration.
“Take that pride with you as you step onto that court next year, and know that with every step you take, you’re paving the way for the next generation. [Javante] has shown that you can be a student and an athlete, and this is what your opportunities could look like.”
Edwards is coming off an electric junior campaign, where he averaged 20.1 ppg over 28 games, including a season-high 34 against Kenwood Academy (IL). In his first three seasons at Carmen Northwest, the Eagles have been one of the winningest programs in the Milwaukee City Conference, racking up a 36-3 record against MCC opponents en route to division titles in 2021-22 (Blue Division), 2022-23 (Gold Division), and 2023-24 (Gold Division).
Edwards was named an all-conference player each year, finishing as a second-teamer in his respective divisions during his freshman and sophomore seasons before being named to the first team as a junior.
“It took a village for me to be here,” Edwards said. “I appreciate Carmen for having my back for the last four years. They never gave up on me.”
Next season, Edwards will join his former Carmen Northwest teammate Dupree Fletcher Jr. in the Division I ranks. Fletcher Jr., a former star in the MCC, is a freshman at Grambling State University.
